RIVER FOREST, Ill. –
Bailey Grayvold (
Sr.-Norway, Mich.) and
Rachel Stankevich (
Jr.-Goodman, Wis.) both set new career highs for scoring but the Lakeland University women's basketball team came up just short of an incredible comeback in an 87-82 loss at Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon.
Grayvold scored 28 points and Stankevich added 26, the two highest-scoring games by Muskie players this season. Lakeland saw its winning streak end at seven games, though, and dropped to 9-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and 11-6 overall.
The Muskies trailed by as many as 25 points in the second half and roared back from a 20-point fourth quarter deficit to get within three points with 2 1/2 minutes left in the game. Lakeland went on a 20-3 run over a span of 4:43 and trailed just 78-75 after a basket by
Tori Lauren (
Fr.-Gwinn, Mich.) with 2:31 left.
The three-pointer was a friend to the Cougars (10-6 overall, 9-4 NACC) all day, though, and Concordia's 14th made triple of the contest was a big one, coming from Taylor Jacobsen on the following possession for an 81-75 lead.
Kayla Clark (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.) answered with another three-pointer to get the Muskies back within three, and Lakeland even had a chance to tie with a minute left. With the shot clock winding down, though, Lauren Orr scored on a layup with 19 seconds left, and Concordia closed it out by making four free throws in the final nine seconds.
The Muskies trailed almost from the start and were behind 49-30 at halftime after the Cougars made nine first-half three-pointers. Concordia pushed the lead as high as 25 at 63-38 with 6:07 left in the third quarter, and still led 72-50 after three quarters.
Grayvold made 7 of 17 from the field and 11 of 15 from the free throw line. Stankevich converted 12 of 19 field goals and also added a game-high 10 rebounds. Clark also scored 11 points, including three three-pointers, and also posted four assists, and Lauren also finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots off the bench.
Lakeland shot 45.3% for the game (29 of 64) and hit 17 of 28 from the foul line (60.7%). Concordia shot 40.6% (28 of 69) but was 14 of 31 from three-point range (45.2%) and 17-for-20 from the charity stripe (85.0%). Orr scored 25 points off the bench to lead the Cougars, while Miranda Rogers made five three-pointers to lead the barrage from long range.
The Muskies are back home Tuesday when they host Marian University at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
