Muskies put it all together for big NACC sweep of Eagles

MADISON – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team shed weeks of Friday night frustrations and years of struggles against Edgewood College, defeating the Eagles in three sets in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

The Muskies snapped a 10-match losing streak against Edgewood with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 win at the Todd Wehr Edgedome for a big conference win. Lakeland defeated the Eagles for the first time since 2009, won on Friday night in league play for the first time in four tries this season, and also moved closer to clinching a spot in the conference tournament.

Shelby Welsh (Jr.-Ogallala, Neb.) finished with a season-best 14 kills with just two errors and also added 10 digs as the Muskies (10-17 overall, 5-4 NACC) were the better team on the attack. Lakeland hit .210 with 41 kills and 16 errors while Edgewood (12-14 overall, 6-3 NACC) hit .067 with 27 kills and 19 errors.

The Muskies withstood quick starts by the hosts in each of the first two sets to gain the upper hand, and also needed a flourish to rally and win the first set. The Eagles fought back from being down 17-11 and used a 5-1 late run to take a 23-22 lead in the opening set, but Emilie Schartner (Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) posted two huge kills and Neenah Primas (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) added a service ace as Lakeland pulled out the set.

Edgewood then took an 11-7 lead early in the second set, but the Muskies again rallied. Primas served two more aces and Welsh heated up to score four of Lakeland's final five points to win the set. The Muskies then got the jump in the third set, building an early 10-4 lead and never letting the Eagles seriously threaten the rest of the way.

Shannon Bishop (So.-River Grove, Ill..) also finished with 10 kills and just three errors, while Primas led the setters with 17 assists. Allison Errthum (Sr.-Joliet, Ill.) led the back row with 20 digs and Emma Bruder (Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) added 14 digs, while Schartner led the blockers with four blocks.

The Muskies are back in NACC play tomorrow when they travel to face Rockford University for a noon start in Rockford, Ill. Following that, Lakeland also will take on Maranatha Baptist at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match as part of a triangular.
