Dominican wins three close sets to end Lakeland women’s volleyball season

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – A standout individual performance by freshman Gillian Jones was the difference as Dominican University ended the Lakeland University women's volleyball team's season with a three-set sweep in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday night.

Jones finished with a career-high 17 kills and the No. 4 seed Stars edged the fifth-seeded Muskies 26-24, 25-23, 25-20. Dominican advanced to a semifinal match Thursday night at top seed Concordia University Wisconsin, while Lakeland saw its season end with a 15-18 record.

The Muskies came up just short in a match far closer than the final set tally indicates. The teams combined for 27 ties and 11 lead changes over the three sets, including 16 ties and six lead changes in an ultra-close first set alone.

Dominican (17-12 overall) wound up being just a little bit better at the end of sets, though. The Stars won both the first and second sets after Lakeland had rallied to tie at 23-23, and also closed the third set with seven of the final 10 points, including the final three of the match.

Jones easily surpassed her previous high of 11 kills, hitting .371 for the match, and also tied for team honors with 17 digs. She assumed the lead role while teammate Kendyl Todd, the conference's leader in hitting percentage and second in kills, got off to a slow start before warming up late and finishing with 11 kills.

The Muskies also had several solid performances from their hitters. Brittini Scoles (Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) led the team with 10 kills while Shelby Welsh (Jr.-Ogallala, Neb.) and Megan Goeser (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) both added eight kills each, including Goeser on 19 swings without an error for a .421 hitting percentage.

Lakeland as a team was unable to match Dominican's .279 hitting percentage and saw its late-season six-match winning streak come to a close. The Muskies still hit a respectable .163  with 35 kills and 15 errors, including just five errors combined over the final two sets.

Allison Errthum (Sr.-Joliet, Ill.) closed out her four-year career with a match-high 20 digs, with Welsh and Emma Bruder (Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) adding 11 digs each. Neenah Primas (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) finished with 17 assists and Shannon Bishop (So.-River Grove, Ill.) and Emilie Schartner (Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) both posted four blocks each.

Errthum concluded her career with 1,541 digs, fourth-best all-time in Lakeland history. Scoles also wrapped up her four-year career with 954 kills.
