Edgewood College scored just over 13 minutes into the match and made it stand up the rest of the way as the Lakeland University women's soccer team lost a tough 1-0 decision Wednesday under the lights at Taylor Field.
Shannon Kaufmann scored at 13 minutes 7 seconds of the match off an assist from Mady Warda, and the Muskies never could get the equalizer in losing for the second time in five home matches this season. Lakeland dropped to 3-8 overall and is now 0-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies stayed in it despite Edgewood holding possession for the majority of the match. The Eagles finished with a 17-4 advantage in shots, and Muskies keeper
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made five saves and also received help when her defense cleared away a header by Edgewood's Olivia De Castro in the sixth minute.
Lakeland had all of its best offensive chances in the first half, when it got off all four of its shots on goal.
Brianna Johnson (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) had a pair of shots, including one with just over three minutes left in the half.
Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Zeni Yacab (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also attempted shots as Edgewood (5-6 overall, 1-3 NACC) held only a slim 5-4 advantage in shot attempts in the first half.
The Eagles controlled the second half with a 12-0 advantage in shots on goal and continued to press the goal late with six corner kicks. Lakeland's defense in front of Daehling including
Becca Giessen (
Sr.-West Bend, Wis.),
Elizabeth Siebert (
So.-Mount Pulaski, Ill.) and
Rachel Wilson (
Fr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) kept the quality attempts to a minimum, though, even as the Muskies found it difficult to generate great opportunities for themselves late.
Warda led Edgewood with five shot attempts while De Castro and Madelyn Peach added three shots each. Jessica Gulig made four saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Eagles.
Lakeland is back on the road Saturday when it travels to face Benedictine (Ill.) University at 5:30 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
