LISLE, Ill. –
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) and
Karisa Rowland (
So.-Peoria, Ariz.) combined to make 14 saves in goal but Benedictine University defeated the Lakeland University women's soccer team 3-0 Saturday evening.
The Eagles scored all three of their goals in the match's first 19 minutes 31 seconds before the Muskies' goalkeepers combined to stop Benedictine's final 13 shots on goal. Lakeland was unable to generate any offense, though, and dropped its sixth straight match and is now 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Benedictine (3-9-1 overall, 3-1-1 NACC) needed just 3:50 to get on the board with Jaci Bridgers scoring unassisted. The Eagles added a second goal in the eighth minute by Sabie Ramirez and then tacked on another when Danielle Melotte scored in the 20th minute to make it 3-0.
The hosts continued to have opportunities and finished the match outshooting the Muskies 28-2. Daehling made six saves in the first half before giving way to Rowland in the second half, who stopped all eight shots on goal she faced.
Lakeland's opportunities were few.
Zeni Yacab (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) had the Muskies' first shot in the 36th minute, and
Meagan Simmons (
So.-Troy, Ill.) also had an opportunity early in the second half, receiving a corner kick by
Makenna Waller (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) but having her attempt blocked by a defender.
Sixteen different players had at least one shot for the Eagles. Melotte finished with a goal and an assist, while goalkeepers Shelby Hernandez and Cassidy Henson did not have to make a save.
Lakeland is right back on the field Sunday when it travels to face Rockford University at 3 p.m. in Rockford, Ill.
