MILWAUKEE – Superb free-throw shooting and 23 points from
Carlos Campos (
So.-Janesville, Wis.) were not enough for the Lakeland University men's basketball team as it lost an 84-64 decision to Milwaukee School of Engineering Tuesday night.
The Raiders never trailed and held big advantages in play inside in winning both teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference openers. The Muskies also were tagged with their first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1 overall.
Lakeland made 19 of 20 from the foul line (95.0%), and Campos followed up his 32-point, 10-rebound performance in a win over Martin Luther (Minn.) College on Sunday by making 7 of 11 from the floor and all nine of his free throw attempts.
MSOE (1-1 overall) stole most of the rest of the highlights, though, led by forward Tegan Miles, who scored 24 points and made 11 of 13 shots from the field. Behind his performance, the Raiders shot 50.7% (35 of 69) and outscored the Muskies 54-20 in the paint.
MSOE broke free from an early tussle, using a 12-4 run to go ahead 26-15 with 7 minutes 13 seconds left in the first half. The Raiders stretched it out more just before halftime, with another 12-3 run leading to a 44-26 lead at the break.
Lakeland cut the deficit back down to nine on two occasions near the midpoint of the second half. Campos scored 13 straight Muskies points, and the last two on a jumper made it 56-47 with 11:32 remaining. Lakeland would get no closer, though, and scored just four points over the final 6:46, missing eight of its final nine shots.
Shakur Jinad (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) also scored 17 points and
Zach Hasenstein (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) added 12 for the Muskies, who shot 37.5% from the field (21 of 56) and also made 3 of 19 from three-point range. No other Lakeland player scored more than four points.
Jason Palesse added 17 points for MSOE, which also finished with a 41-29 rebounding advantage.
The Muskies are back in action after Thanksgiving when they host Concordia University Wisconsin for a conference game Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
