Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Majewski scores career high as Muskies stave off Lawrence

Amanda Majewski (So.-Peshtigo, Wis.) scored a career-high 17 points and the Lakeland University women's basketball team outscored Lawrence University by 13 points in the third quarter on the way to a 66-53 win Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies recovered from a shaky second quarter, in all outscoring the Vikings 33-10 over a stretch of 13 minutes on the way to their third non-conference victory of the season. Lakeland weathered a game effort from the visitors to improve to 3-2 overall this season, including 3-1 outside of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Majewski made 8 of 12 shots from the field and also added five rebounds, four assists and five steals in an outstanding all-around game. She scored the Muskies' first six points of the game as part of a 13-0 run that quickly led to a 10-point lead, and also had a big basket at the end of the first half to tie the game at 28-28 at the break.

Majewski scored 13 points in the first half alone, and Lakeland needed it as Lawrence made a big move in the second quarter. The Vikings (0-3 overall) trailed 17-7 after one quarter but turned the game around in the second period, going on an 18-2 run to suddenly take a 28-22 lead. The Muskies made just one of 11 shots and had six turnovers over a stretch of seven minutes before closing the half with three-pointers by Miranda Jacobson (Jr.-Felch, Mich.) and Majewski to tie it at halftime.

Lakeland extended its run to 14-0 by scoring the first eight points of the second half, taking a 36-28 lead on a layup by Maddy Doll (Sr.-Florence, Wis.) with 7:12 left in the third quarter. The Muskies would never trail again, building their lead to 51-38 by the end of the third quarter and as high as 17 points in the fourth.

Jacobson scored 13 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Doll finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Rachel Stankevich (Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) also scored 10 points and added seven boards, six assists and five steals, and Megan Will (Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) chipped in nine points off the bench.

The Muskies shot 42.4%, making 25 of 59 field goals, and outrebounded the Vikings 40-36. Lakeland also finished 16 steals, inducing Lawrence into 25 turnovers.

Kenya Earl scored a game-high 18 points for the Vikings, who shot 15 of 49 (30.6%) but hit 17 of 21 free throw attempts (81.0%).

Lakeland returns to NACC play Saturday when it hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering at 4:15 p.m.
