The Lakeland University women's basketball team had its best shooting performance of the season and cruised to an 84-52 win over Marian University Saturday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies hit a season-best 46.7% of their shots, making 28 of 60 from the field in winning for the fourth time in their last five games. Lakeland is now 6-3 overall and above the .500 mark in the NACC with a 3-2 league mark.
The Muskies trailed only once in the game at 2-0, took the lead for good late in the first quarter and pulled away over the middle two quarters. Lakeland outscored Marian 23-11 in both the second and third periods to take a 64-34 lead after three quarters.
Miranda Jacobson (
Jr.-Felch, Mich.) finished with team highs of 17 points and eight rebounds and
Rachel Stankevich (
Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) added 12 points, eight assists and five steals.
Megan Will (
Fr.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also added 10 points and
Kaity Birkholz (
Fr.-Watertown, Wis.) scored eight off the bench, leading the way as reserves combined for 37 points for Lakeland.
The Muskies also made 23 of 28 from the free-throw line and forced Marian (2-8 overall, 0-5 NACC) into 30 turnovers. In all, 13 different players scored for Lakeland, including sophomores
Brooke Brandt (
Stevens Point, Wis.) and
Hannah Kanyuh (
Rapid River, Mich.) both scoring their first collegiate points late in the game.
The host Sabres shot 18 of 48 from the field (37.5%) and made just 2 of 11 from three-point range. Brandi Bender scored 14 points to lead Marian.
Lakeland has a break next week for final exams and will play again next Saturday when it travels to face Marian University at 6:15 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
