GREENVILLE, Ill. – A two-day trip to the St. Louis area was a success for the Lakeland University men's volleyball volleyball team, which won two more matches Saturday to conclude a 3-0 weekend.
The Muskies played in a triangular hosted by Greenville (Ill.) College on Saturday and opened with a 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 sweep of Greenville in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match. Lakeland then topped Illinois Institute of Technology in four sets 25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, evening its record at 5-5 this season (2-2 MCVL).
The Muskies trailed only briefly over the course of three sets against host Greenville (3-8 overall, 1-7 MCVL), hitting a solid .333 with 36 kills and just 10 errors.
Tim Robbins (
Sr.-Wheaton, Ill.) and
Matt Stolz (
Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) both had nine kills to lead a balanced attack and
Addison Mertler (
So.-Boca Raton, Fla.) set up the offense with 33 assists.
Lakeland also was strong on the serve with eight service aces, including five by
Desmond Williams (
So.-Riverside, Calif.). The Muskies rounded out a solid performance with 8.5 team blocks, including four by Williams (one solo, three assisted) and three each by Robbins and
Dakota Hunter (
So.-Waukesha, Wis.).
Lakeland also dominated much of the way against Illinois Tech (2-10 overall), never trailing in three of the four sets. Stolz finished with 15 kills and also added a team-high nine digs plus four blocks (two solo, two assisted), part of the Muskies' 10 blocks as a team.
Robbins also finished with eight kills in 12 attacks and
Casey Bolda (
Sr.-Honolulu, Hawaii) finished with six kills, seven digs and three service aces. Williams added five block assists, Mertler led the team with 21 assists and
Noah Cotterman (
So.-Glendale, Ariz.) also added 14 assists.
The Muskies now can take a break until their next match on Friday when they host Wittenberg (Ohio) University at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
