MARQUETTE, Mich. – Shaking off two tough losses to start its season, the Lakeland University softball team rallied for a pair of wins Sunday to wrap up its stay at the Finlandia Dome Classic, hosted by Finlandia (Mich.) University at the Superior Dome.
The Muskies lost their season opener to Calvin (Mich.) College 4-3 on Saturday and then were shut out by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 8-0 in five innings. Lakeland bounced back on Sunday, first with a 6-5 win over UW-Stevens Point in eight innings and then with a 12-4 roll past Northland College to finish with a 2-2 record.
The Muskies started slow on Saturday with losses to strong teams that posted a combined 8-2 record in the event, but things turned around late Sunday morning against UW-Stevens Point. Lakeland rallied from a 4-1 deficit to the Pointers, scoring twice in the seventh to send it to extra innings and then getting two runs in the eighth and holding on in the bottom of the inning for their first win.
Lakeland closed out the tourney with an offensive explosion against Northland, scoring eight runs in the fourth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 10-4 lead. Ten batters came to the plate in the inning that was highlighted by two-run doubles by freshmen
Caitlin Fitzgerald (
Chicago, Ill.) and
Megan Laib (
Tinley Park, Ill.), and the game ended one inning later in the fifth on a two-run triple by
Rylee Garand (
So.-Punta Gorda, Fla.) to invoke the eight-run rule.
Calie Delisi (
Jr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) led the offense with seven hits on the weekend in 14 at bats, including two doubles, two stolen bases and five runs scored.
Sami Jo Williams (
