Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Muskies start fast, race past Comets to get men’s volleyball win

The Lakeland University men's volleyball team got off to a quick start on its way to a three-set sweep of Olivet (Mich.) College Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies dominated the first set and then did enough the rest of the way, cruising to a 25-10, 25-23, 25-22 win in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match. Lakeland played for the first time in eight days and kept above the .500 mark, improving to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the MCVL.

The Muskies hit .476 with 12 kills and just two errors in 21 attacks in a nearly flawless first set. Lakeland built a 7-1 lead and then finished on a 10-3 run with both Noah Cotterman (So.-Glendale, Ariz.) and Christian Frahm (Sr.-Palatine, Ill.) recording two service aces each late in the set.

The Comets (2-10 overall, 0-8 MCVL) scrapped in the final two sets, refusing to let Lakeland get away even as it often held a slim lead. The Muskies led by no more than three at any point of the second set and were tied at 23-23 before a kill by Dakota Hunter (So.-Waukesha, Wis.) and an attack error closed out the set.

Lakeland then built a six-point lead in the later stages of the third set before Olivet rallied to tie it at 20-20 and again at 21 before Matt Stolz (Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) delivered a pair of kills and Nathan Vanderwaal (Fr.-Rockford, Ill.) tipped it over on two at match point.

Stolz was potent on the attack all day with 15 kills and just three errors in 36 attempts. Hunter also finished with eight kills and Dan Matijevic (Sr.-Palatine, Ill.) added seven kills in two sets off the bench.

J.T. Levitt (So.-Schaumburg, Ill.) led the defense with 13 digs and Desmond Williams (So.-Riverside, Calif.) posted four block assists. Addison Mertler (So.-Boca Raton, Fla.) led the setting with 23 assists and Hunter had three service aces, as the Muskies finished with 10 aces as a team.

Lakeland is right back on the court Monday night when it hosts Marian University at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
