Lakeland sweeps season-opening baseball doubleheader

FORT MYERS Fla. – Travis Regalado (So.-Willcox, Ariz.) had five hits at the plate and a save on the mound, pacing the Lakeland University baseball team to a twinbill sweep of Anna Maria (Mass.) College in its season debut Saturday.

The Muskies started their annual spring break trip in fine fashion, opening with a 3-1 win and then following up with a 12-6 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. Lakeland again is playing in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, and both teams were playing their season openers.

Regalado was 5-for-6 hitting on the day, including four hits in the first game. He also came on for the save in the opener, recording the final two outs to get the save after Connor Hilburn (So.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) allowed seven hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings to earn the win.

The Muskies had just four hits in the first game, two of them coming from Kenny Pekarek (Sr.-Sagola, Mich.). The catcher also drove in a pair of runs, including a run-scoring single in the third to score Regalado and put Lakeland ahead for good at 2-1.

The Muskies then warmed up at the plate in the second game, hammering out 15 hits. Jody Harrison (So.-Pontiac, Mich.) also had three hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases, and both Matt Benninghoff (So.-Highland, Ind.) and Cameron Sharp (So.-Pflugerville, Texas) both added two hits each.

Lakeland actually trailed 6-2 after three innings but roared back with eight runs in the fourth, sending 12 hitters to the plate. Drew Richard (Jr.-Kieler, Wis.) tripled to drive in two and Brandon Punzel (Fr.-Escanaba, Mich.) also doubled in two more as part of a seven-hit inning.

Freshman Chris Lilly (Phillipsburg, N.J.) battled through a rocky start to throw a complete game and get the win in his collegiate debut. Lilly allowed eight hits and six runs (four earned) with five strikeouts, and in the final four innings allowed just one hit and faced the minimum.
