FORT MYERS Fla. – A hard-fought extra innings loss marked a tough start to the day for the Lakeland University baseball team, which lost both ends of a doubleheader with Hiram (Ohio) College Monday in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Muskies lost by a 5-2 score in 11 innings in the opener and then fell to the Terriers 13-6 in their second game. Lakeland picked up its first two losses of the season and is now 3-2 overall after three days of its spring break trip.
The Muskies' first loss came in painful fashion, as Hiram scored a run in the top of the seventh to keep the game going and then took the lead with three runs in the top of the 11th, all unearned. Before the Terriers tied it in the seventh, Lakeland had just taken the lead in the bottom of the sixth when
Connor Hilburn (
So.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) singled to score pinch runner
Sam Martin (
Sr.-Milton, Wis.).
Travis Regalado (
So.-Willcox, Ariz.) and
Cameron Sharp (
So.-Pflugerville, Texas) both had two hits each, and the Muskies also received some excellent pitching performances to stay in the game. Freshman
Michael Austin (
Glendale, Ariz.) started and allowed a run in six innings with three strikeouts, and
Christopher Leopold (
Jr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) pitched two hitless innings in relief, striking out three.
Lakeland got off to a rough start in the second game, allowing eight first-inning runs to fall into a hole it couldn't get out of. Regalado had three more hits and
Christian Arthurs (
Fr.-North Fond du Lac, Wis.) also added three hits, and
Jaired Dozier (
So.-Colorado Springs, Colo.) added two hits and two runs batted in.
The Muskies get a pair of days off from varsity games before playing again next on Thursday against Elms (Mass.) College, with a doubleheader beginning at 8 a.m. Central time.
