Niki Saviano (
Fr.-Orland Park, Ill.) pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the first game and the Lakeland University softball team generated plenty of offense in a doubleheader sweep of Edgewood College Saturday afternoon in its home opener.
The Muskies defeated the Eagles 8-0 in the first game and then 9-5 in the second, showing little rust in their return to the field after a three-week break. Lakeland also won its opening doubleheader in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play in improving to 8-8 overall.
The Muskies had been idle since March 10 but got right to work dominating the first game of the twinbill. Lakeland scored in all four of its at bats, including
Caten Teff (
Sr.-Alpena, Mich.) hitting her eighth double of the season and driving in two runs, plus
Sami Jo Williams (
Sr.-Sussex, Wis.),
Rosa Gonzalez (
Jr.-Elwood, Ill.) and
Jessica Beaudry (
Jr.-Gladstone, Mich.) all adding run-scoring extra-base hits.
Saviano got all the run support she needed when Lakeland scored twice in the first inning, and she proceeded to keep the Eagles (2-14 overall, 0-2 NACC) hitless. Edgewood only reached its first two batters of the game on walks, but Saviano got out of the first with a fielder's choice and a double play and then retired 12 straight over the final four innings to throw the Muskies' first no-hitter since
Taylor Bush (
So.-Waukesha, Wis.) hurled an eight-inning no-no last season on Feb. 27 against UW-Superior.
Lakeland did most of its offensive damage in the second game in the fourth inning, erupting for seven runs to take over.
Jocelyn Yeager (
Sr.-Elm Grove, Wis.) and Bush both had two-run doubles in the inning and Gonzalez also added an RBI single.
Bush finished with a complete game, allowing eight hits and five runs (two earned) with a career-high 10 strikeouts. She also added a pair of hits and three RBIs, while
Carly Brault (
Jr.-Brillion, Wis.) also finished with two hits.
Lakeland returns to the field again tomorrow when it travels to face Concordia University Wisconsin at noon in Mequon.
