Game Recap: Baseball |

Regalado homers twice, Lakeland dominates opener in split with WLC

Travis Regalado (So.-Willcox, Ariz.) hit two home runs as part of another big day and the Lakeland University baseball team gained a doubleheader split with Wisconsin Lutheran College Sunday afternoon.

The Muskies rolled to a 9-1 win in the opening game behind some timely hitting as well as excellent pitching from Connor Hilburn (So.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Jack Shevalier (So.-Helena, Mich.). Wisconsin Lutheran came back for a 15-13 win in a wild second game of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader where the two teams combined for 32 hits.

Regalado finished with six hits on the day, including a two-run home run in the third inning of the first game that put Lakeland ahead for good. He also added a 5-for-6 performance in the second game as the Muskies nearly completed an improbable comeback from an early 11-run deficit.

Lakeland (11-19 overall, 3-11 NACC) also received excellent pitching in the first game, as Hilburn induced the Warriors into 10 ground ball outs as well as three double plays in his seven innings. He scattered nine hits but allowed just one run with three strikeouts before Shevalier came on and pitching two hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Kenny Pekarek (Sr.-Sagola, Mich.) and Bryan Bridges (So.-North Chicago, Ill.) both had two hits and two RBIs each in the opener, and the Muskies made good use of their nine hits and also took advantage of three WLC errors.

Lakeland fell into a big hole quickly in the second game, trailing 12-1 in the third inning and 14-1 after 4 1/2 frames. That's when the Muskies put together an incredible rally in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs after two were out and after the Warriors committed an error trying to get the third out of the inning throwing to first after a dropped third strike. The sudden scoring spurt included four consecutive RBI doubles coming from Cameron Sharp (So.-Pflugerville, Texas), Pekarek, Hilburn and Regalado, the last one cutting the deficit to 14-9.

The Muskies continued to creep closer and got within two in the ninth after Regalado hit his second round-tripper of the day to left. Wisconsin Lutheran pitcher Jacob Smrz closed it out, though, getting help as second baseman Jake Schwall made a leaping stab of a line drive for the final out of the game.

Drew Richard (Jr.-Kieler, Wis.) came up with two hits and drove in three. Chris Lilly (Fr.-Phillipsburg, N.J.) also provided a steadying presence pitching, coming on in the third inning and pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five.

The Muskies are in action next on Thursday when they travel to face Lawrence University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
