Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) scored twice to lead a cast of four different players who scored goals and the Lakeland University women's soccer team won again at home, defeating Mount Mary University 5-0 Wednesday night under the lights.
The Muskies improved to 3-0 at their new home at Taylor Field, winning their first three home matches of the season for the first time since 2004. Lakeland's third win of the season also surpassed its win total from all of last season, when its 2016 team finished 2-15-1.
The hosts controlled possession, finishing with a 25-4 shot advantage. It took some time for the Muskies to break through, but they did at 21:28 of the match when Blue Angels goalkeeper Hannah Rose couldn't corral a shot by
Rachel Wilson (
Fr.-Gilbert, Ariz.) from the right wing, and
Makenna Waller (
So.-De Pere, Wis.) was on the doorstep to knock it in for her second tally of the season.
Cerney then scored a pair of goals, her second and third of the season, both coming in the first half.
Brianna Johnson (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) assisted on both goals, two of her three assists on the night, and her second assist played ahead to Cerney for a breakaway and a goal that made it 3-0 with less than two minutes left before halftime.
Lakeland added two more goals in the second half, the first coming just 2:15 after halftime.
Jenna Borts (
Fr.-Oak Creek, Wis.) was the recipient of Johnson's work in the middle 15 yards out, and her shot from the left side from outside the 18 was lifted over Rose's head and into the net.
The Muskies added one final score in the 73rd minute, when Waller's cross from the left side got to
Alex Gill (
Fr.-Niagara, Wis.), who drove it in for her first collegiate goal.
Cerney and Johnson were dominant at the forward positions, combining for 10 shot attempts even after sitting for a time in the second half. Borts, Waller and
Stephanie Figueroa (
Jr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) also kept the pressure on in the midfield, combining for nine more shot attempts.
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) had to make just three saves to record her first collegiate shutout. Rose made nine saves in goal for Mount Mary, which dropped to 1-3 overall.
Lakeland now gets ready for the open of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play in one week when it travels to face Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.
