Jenna Borts (
Oak Creek, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal but the Lakeland University women's soccer team was defeated by Ripon College 6-1 Friday evening in its opening non-conference match.
Ripon's Paige Pierce scored a hat trick in the first half and four goals in the match for the hosts. The Muskies were defeated in their season opener and the debut for new coach
Robert Blake.
Borts provided the highlight for Lakeland, scoring in the 78th minute to break up the shutout. Borts drilled a free kick from outside the penalty area into the net, capitalizing on the final of her team-high six shots.
The Muskies were outshot 23-9, including 14-2 in the first half. Ripon pulled well ahead late in the first half and early in the second, as a goal with just 1:13 left before halftime started a string of four goals over less than 20 minutes to give the Red Hawks a 6-0 lead.
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made 14 saves in goal for Lakeland.

So.-De Pere, Wis.),
Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Zeni Yacab (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) joined Borts with shot attempts on goal.
The Muskies now get ready for their home opener on Sunday when they welcome the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a noon kickoff. The contest with be the first-ever Lakeland soccer match on Taylor Field, the new home for both Muskies soccer teams.
