Makenna Waller (
So.-De Pere, Wis.) scored the match's only goal in the 49th minute, enough for the Lakeland University women's soccer team to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Superior 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies boasted a day of firsts that included the program's first-ever match at Taylor Field and its first win of the 2017 season. The victory also marked the first win for first-year Lakeland head coach Rob Blake in just his second match as coach.
In a match where scoring chances were at a premium, Waller created one just a few minutes after halftime. She stole the ball from a UW-Superior player in the middle of the field and passed into the right corner, where
Alex Gill (
Fr.-Niagara, Wis.) chased it down.
Gill turned and fired a shot at the goal that was blocked back, but Waller chased it down near the sideline and had some space. She took her time, and then lofted a shot at the goal from a sharp angle. The shot carried over UW-Superior goalkeeper Bailey Henderson, hit the left post and then caromed into the right side of the net. The goal was Waller's first of the season and wound up being her first career game-winning goal.
Staked to a one-goal lead, the Muskies held firm the rest of the way, allowing the Yellowjackets only a select few chances in the second half. Goalkeeper
Grace Daehling (
Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) came on for
Karisa Rowland (
So.-Peoria, Ariz.) and made three saves, two coming shortly after the goal. The toughest came on a drive from 25 yards out by Hailey Kontny in the 59th minute, but Lakeland's defense and midfield work keep the guests from making any sustained charge.
The teams combined for seven shots on goal, including just two in a scoreless first half.
Hope Cerney (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) took the first for the Muskies in the 37th minute, getting a run down the left side, cutting back but then slipping just as she shot. UW-Superior's Sarah Fjeran then had a chance with just 2:46 left before halftime, catching just outside the box on the right side, but her hard shot went right at Rowland positioned just inside the right post.
Cerney finished with three shot attempts, all in the first half, while Waller,
Jenna Borts (
Fr.-Oak Creek, Wis.) and
Brianna Johnson (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) all added two shots each.
Lakeland next will face Lawrence University for another non-conference match Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Appleton.
