Shannon Bishop (
So.-River Grove, Ill.) again made a big difference on the attack and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team picked up a much-needed win over Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies swept the Raiders in three hard-fought sets, winning 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 for their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season. Lakeland earned its fourth win of the season, improving to 4-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The victory was far from easy, as the teams combined for 22 ties and 10 lead changes over the three sets. MSOE led by a point in the later stages of the second set, was tied at 20-20 in the third set and made the hosts sweat after fighting off three set points in the first set.
Bishop paced the Muskies' hitting with 13 kills, including seven in the second set as the hosts went on a late 7-2 run to swing momentum after trailing as late as 15-14. She also was efficient, with just three errors in 25 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage.
Lakeland was balanced behind her, with four players with at least five kills.
Allison Errthum (
Sr.-Joliet, Ill.) paced the pack with seven kills and also added eight digs, and
Megan Goeser (
Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) added five kills plus two assisted blocks.
The Muskies received solid contributions a number of their freshmen.
Shelby Block (
Sheboygan, Wis.) finished with five kills,
Abby Baumgartner (
Kewaunee, Wis.) added four kills, two service aces and a big solo block,
Neenah Primas (
Oostburg, Wis.) led the setting with 18 assists and added two service aces, and
Taylor Bubolz (
Fr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) finished with nine assists and three aces.
Emma Bruder (
Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) also finished with 18 digs and
Brianna Johnson (
Jr.-Altoona, Wis.) added 10 digs. Lakeland's back row work helped hold the Raiders (7-8 overall, 0-2 NACC) to a .140 hitting percentage, with only Rachel Lynde (11 kills) and Hannah Pekarek (eight) finishing with more than three kills.
The Muskies have another weekend invitational coming up with the IIAC-NACC Challenge event against Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools this weekend. Lakeland opens Friday against Buena Vista (Iowa) University at 3 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
