PELLA, Iowa –
Brittini Scoles (
Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) warmed up for a season-high 18 kills and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team picked up a most satisfying victory by rallying from two sets down to defeat Central (Iowa) College Friday night in the IIAC/NACC Challenge.
The Muskies battled back for a 20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-8 win, the team's first five-set win of the season. Lakeland did so on Central's home court in the event matching teams from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Scoles had her best hitting night of the season, registering 18 kills with just five errors in 37 attacks for a .351 hitting percentage. She finished just three kills shy of her career high of 21 set last season.
Junior
Shelby Welsh (
Ogallala, Neb.) also had a big night off the bench with Muskies career-high 11 kills plus 12 digs, three block assists and a team-high three service aces. Her two aces to start off the fifth set got Lakeland off to a lead that it would never relinquish the rest of the way.
Emma Bruder (
Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) paced three players in double figures in digs with 15, while
Brianna Johnson (
Jr.-Altoona, Wis.) also added 10 digs.
Taylor Bubolz (
Fr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) finished with 29 assists and
Neenah Primas (
Oostburg, Wis.) added 20 assists, and the Muskies also received good contributions from their middles with
Megan Goeser (
Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) finishing with seven kills and five blocks (one solo, four assisted),
Erin Iwanski (
So.-St. Francis, Ill.) contributing six kills and three block assists and
Emilie Schartner (
Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) adding four block assists.
The Muskies finished 1-1 on the day as the tourney started with a four-set loss to Buena Vista (Iowa) University, with the Beavers prevailing 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14. Statistics for the match are unavailable at this time.
Lakeland concludes play in the Challenge event today with two more matches, first against the University of Dubuque at 10 a.m. and then closing against Loras College at 2 p.m.
