Lakeland University gets another chance at toppling a nationally ranked team from the state when it travels to face the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Saturday evening for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium in Platteville.
The Muskies will play a ranked team from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the third time in a year when they take on the Pioneers, ranked 10th in the latest AFCA NCAA Division III Coaches Poll and 13th in the most recent D3football.com top 25 poll. The game also is a matchup of a pair of Division III playoff teams from a year ago.
Lakeland (1-1 overall) enters off a narrow 37-35 loss to Hope (Mich.) last week, a game that wasn't decided until the final seconds when the Muskies missed on a tying two-point conversion after a touchdown and then were unable to recover an onside kick.
Michael Whitley set a new school record with 48 completions, connecting on more than 80% of his 58 passing attempts, with
Allante Gardner catching 13 passes for 104 yards.
Jody Harrison (11 receptions, 77 yards) and
Dezmen Morse (10 catches, 106 yards) also had huge games receiving, and
Eldrada Meeks rushed for a career-high 128 yards.
UW-Platteville (2-0 overall) took a long road trip east last week and rallied from a halftime deficit for a 38-29 win over Hampden-Sydney (Va.). Wyatt Thompson rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Mark Johnson caught nine passes for 87 yards and a score, and Michael Pratl kicked a go-ahead 31-yard field goal late in the third quarter. Platteville overcame deficits of 13-0 after one quarter and 29-21 at halftime, with its defense forcing three turnovers, including two in the second half to spark the comeback.
