Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early goal the difference as Lakeland falls to Lawrence

APPLETON – Ryan Berkley scored a goal 5:39 into the game, and Lawrence University made it stand up the rest of the way as the Lakeland University women's soccer team lost a tough 1-0 decision Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match at Lawrence's Banta Bowl.

The Muskies were done in by some bad luck after a defender stumbled, Kelli Quick intercepted and tapped to Berkley, who fired a shot from the left side from more than 30 yards out that tucked inside the upper right corner of the net. Lakeland never could get the equalizer and dropped to 1-2 overall this season.

The Vikings (1-2 overall) outshot the Muskies 19-9 for the match, with Grace Daehling (Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) making eight saves, including six in the first half. Berkley attempted 15 of the hosts' 19 shots.

Lakeland's only shot on goal came in the first half when it pushed deep into the Vikings' end. Jenna Borts (Fr.-Oak Creek, Wis.) had a shot blocked before Stephanie Figueroa (Jr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) got off an attempt from 20 yards out that was saved by Lawrence goalkeeper Katlyn Seiffert.

The Muskies were on the attack more in the second half, attempting six of their nine shots. Brianna Johnson (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) attempted three shots early in the half, and Borts, Zeni Yacab (So.-Chicago, Ill.), and Hope Cerney (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) also got off shots in the second half.

Lakeland is back home for its next match Friday when it hosts Maranatha Baptist University at 4 p.m. at Taylor Field.
