NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Duplicating its results from the day before, the Lakeland University women's volleyball team closed out play at the Music City Classic with a second straight split Saturday.
The Muskies defeated Huntingdon (Ala.) College in three sets for the second straight day to open the day before falling to Wartburg (Iowa) College in three sets to wrap up play in Nashville. Lakeland finished with a 2-2 record on its season-opening trip.
Lakeland received a challenge from Huntingdon before winning 26-24, 25-20, 25-22. A closely contested match included 26 ties and nine lead changes, with the first and third sets both close with neither team leading by more than four points.
The Muskies fought off a set point in the first set, closing with three straight points to win with a block by
Allison Errthum (
Sr.-Joliet, Ill.) and
Megan Goeser (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.). Lakeland took hold of the second set early and won comfortably, but the third set was another battle until pass midway, when
Shelby Welsh (
Jr.-Ogallala, Neb.) served a pair of aces as part of a three-point run to take a 17-14 lead.
Shannon Bishop (
So.-River Grove, Ill.) led the attack with 10 kills, while freshman setter
Neenah Primas (
Oostburg, Wis.) posted a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs. Fellow freshman
Taylor Bubolz (
Howards Grove, Wis.) also added 10 assists.
The Muskies were competitive in the first and third sets in a 27-25, 25-12, 25-20 loss to Wartburg to finish the day. Lakeland came back from had a seven-point deficit to earn a set point at 25-24 in the first set, but the Knights rallied and then dominated the second set before also closing with a 7-2 run to win the final set.
Bishop and
Brittini Scoles (
Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) both posted six kills each to lead the hitters, Primas posted 13 assists, and
Emma Bruder (
Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) did heavy lifting in the back row with 17 digs.
The Muskies now get ready for their home opener Wednesday when they host UW-Stevens Point for a 7 p.m. match at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
