Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stankevich scores No. 1,000, Jacobson notches triple-double as Lakeland holds off Alverno

Rachel Stankevich (Sr.-Goodman, Wis.) and Miranda Jacobson (Jr.-Felch, Mich.) both accomplished outstanding individual achievements and the Lakeland University women's basketball team earned an eventful 72-58 win over Alverno College Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Stankevich scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 12th player in school history to reach that mark, while Jacobson notched a triple-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. The two helped the Muskies stretch their winning streak to four games with their fourth straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win.

Stankevich scored nine of her 10 points in the game's deciding stretch in the fourth quarter and reached the career milestone in front of many family and friends with a three-pointer from the right corner with 2 minutes, 11 seconds left in the game. The points were the final of the game for Lakeland, which finished the game outscoring Alverno 21-7 over the final 8 1/2 minutes.

The victory did not come easily, as Lakeland (12-7 overall, 9-5 NACC) built a 21-point lead only to see Alverno come all the way back to tie early in the fourth quarter. The Inferno trailed 46-25 with 6:38 left in the third quarter but fought back to tie at 51-51 with 8:54 left in the game after a jumper by Dani Hood, the basket capping a 16-0 run.

Lakeland hit a season-high 13 three-pointers in the game, though, and none was more timely than when Amanda Majewski (So.-Peshtigo, Wis.) knocked one down to put the Muskies back ahead 54-51 with 8:29 left in the game. That was the first of five triples in the fourth quarter for Lakeland, which answered Alverno's rally by scoring 13 of the next 16 points to rebuild a 64-54 lead.

The Muskies got off to a good start to the game, building a 20-8 lead after one quarter and extending the lead to 16 points on two occasions, including 35-19 late in the second quarter before the Inferno got back within 35-23 at the break.

Alverno, which played just six players in the game, fell behind even further early in the second half to 21 points down, but the guests simply did not go away. The Inferno continued to pack in the defense, daring the Muskies to shoot from outside, and when Lakeland hit a cold spell Alverno sliced into the lead and tied it early in the fourth before the Muskies pulled back away.

Jacobson scored 11 of her 18 points and also grabbed four rebounds in the first quarter alone. She later picked up five assists in the fourth quarter, and finished the game with career highs in rebounds and assists.

Majewski also finished with 15 points, hitting five three-pointers, and Maddy Doll (Sr.-Florence, Wis.) added five points plus 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Lakeland shot 40.3% from the field (27 of 67), including 13 of 35 from three-point range, and also outrebounded Alverno 45-29.

Gabby Hood led the Inferno and also threatened a triple-double, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Alverno shot 43.4% (23 of 53) but was just 4 of 16 from three-point range.

The Muskies now get ready for a showdown with NACC-leading Wisconsin Lutheran College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
