Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Muskies give Stars all they can handle even in pair of soccer defeats on Homecoming

The Lakeland University men's and women's soccer teams both put forth outstanding efforts keeping Dominican University at bay for long periods of time even in dropping both of their games Saturday evening on the Muskies' Homecoming.

The Stars finally pulled away late in both matches, but not until both Muskies teams played valiantly. Dominican eventually won both ends of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader, taking the women's match 4-0 and then pulling out the men's duel by a 2-0 score.

Dominican scored five of its six goals in the final 14 minutes of the two matches, as Lakeland defended its goal and received outstanding work from its keepers even as the Stars were regularly on the attack.

Dominican's only early advantage came in the women's match, as Holli Cochran scored just over 10 minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. The Muskies (4-7-1 overall, 0-4 NACC) trailed just 1-0 in the 77th minute of the women's match before the Stars scored three goals in the final 13 minutes 24 seconds.

Grace Daehling (So.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made 14 saves for Lakeland, including a fully extended dive to deflect away a shot in the second half. The Stars also attempted 14 corner kicks, keeping the ball frequently deep in the Muskies' end, but Lakeland minimized the damage until Daniela Tovar-Miranda knocked in a corner at 76:36 of the match, and Cochran added a pair of goals in the final four minutes for Dominican (9-2 overall, 3-0 NACC).

The Lakeland men's team (3-8 overall, 0-4 NACC) played an even more dramatic match, as Tyson Carter (Fr.-Yakima, Wash.) made a number of spectacular stops in the first half alone. He twice came out of goal to challenge Stars players who had broken free, cutting off the angle and making saves, and he also saved a penalty kick and as well as a rebound shot with just over two minutes left in the first half.

Carter made 10 saves in the first half alone and 15 total for the match, but Dominican (6-3 overall, 3-1 NACC) finally got on the board with 9:42 left in regulation when Alexander Lulek headed in a corner kick by Isaac Perez. The Stars added a second goal in the 86th minute as Denis Soldo threaded a pass through the feet of a Lakeland defender to Nicolo Vitale, who put it in on the near side of the goal.

Dominican finished with huge shot advantages in both matches, with the Stars women outshooting the Muskies 24-0 and the Dominican men posting a 30-4 advantage. Ryoto Kinoshita (Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) registered three of Lakeland's four shots, with his best opportunity coming late in the second half from the left side when he fired wide left of the target.

Both Muskies teams are in action again on Wednesday. The Lakeland men's squad will host Edgewood College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field, while the women's team will travel to Madison to take on Edgewood, also at 7 p.m.
