Box Score 3 Eliana Arbetman (
Sr.-Oak Park, Ill.) piled up 25 kills over two matches, including a career high in the first match as Lakeland University won both of its matches in its own triangular hosted Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies rolled past Finlandia (Mich.) University 25-13, 25-14, 25-15 and then toughed out a 25-17, 25-27, 25-20, 29-27 win over Central (Iowa) College. Lakeland ran its winning streak to four matches and at 17-7 overall on the season has clinched a winning record for the first time since 2015.
A number of players contributed in the two non-conference matches, including both Arbetman and
Abby Baumgartner (
So.-Kewaunee, Wis.) racking up career highs in kills against Finlandia. Arbetman finished with 14 kills in the three-set match and Baumgartner added 12 kills without an error, hitting at a .522 rate as the Muskies hit a collective .383 as a team with 50 kills and just nine errors.
Adding to the career bests,
Davan Fleming (
Jr.-Cremona, Alberta, Canada) also added a new personal high with 44 assists plus eight digs against the Lions, and
Karson Brown (
So.-Ashland, Wis.) also contributed nine digs.
Erin Iwanski (
Jr.-St. Francis, Wis.) also came off the bench to chip in five kills in nine attacks plus five blocks (one solo, four assisted).
The Muskies got a challenge in the second match from a young but rangy Central team, which fought off five set points to steal the second set and very nearly pushed the match to five sets.
The Dutch (11-14 overall) led 21-18 late in the fourth and had a set point at 25-24 even after a Lakeland rally, but the hosts dug in with Arbetman and
Shelby Welsh (
Sr.-Ogallala, Neb.) providing much of the offense down the stretch. Welsh had four of the team's final eight points and Arbetman added a kill for a 27-26 lead and then put down the clincher for the victory.
Shannon Bishop (
Jr.-River Grove, Ill.) finished with 15 kills, Welsh totaled 12 and Arbetman added 11 to lead the attack, while
Emma Bruder (
Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) led five in double figures in digs with a total of 18 digs. Welsh (16 digs) and Bishop (13) both totaled double-doubles, and
Neenah Primas (
So.-Oostburg, Wis.) also performed the feat with 33 assists and 13 digs.
In the third match of the triangular, played between Lakeland's two matches, Central defeated Finlandia 25-14, 25-20, 25-15. Hana Edgerton finished with seven kills and four blocks, Landry Luhring added six kills and seven digs and DeLana Kron finished with 11 digs. Finlandia's Shannon Anderson notched a match-high 13 digs and Marina Dalton added eight kills.
The Muskies return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
