Curran, Stewart first two Muskies to have jerseys retired

For the first time in its long, successful history, Lakeland University's athletic department is retiring the numbers worn by two legendary Muskies.

At halftime of the Homecoming football game, Lakeland retired the No. 33 worn by Pat Curran, a 1972 Lakeland graduate, who was one of the most accomplished football players in Lakeland history.

Later this year during a basketball game, Lakeland will retire the No. 54 worn by Waymon Stewart, a 1969 Lakeland graduate, who was one of the most accomplished basketball players in Lakeland history.

Curran was joined on the field for the ceremony by family and former several former Lakeland teammates.

Curran was a running back who graduated having set eight school records. Today, he still holds every school scoring record. He was a two-time All-American and was among the nation's leaders in rushing and scoring.

In 1969, he was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played 10 seasons in the NFL for the Rams and San Diego Chargers.

After retiring as a player, he served as business manager for the Chargers and later as a color analyst on Chargers radio broadcasts. He then became a successful businessman working for Snap-on.

He is a member of the Lakeland Athletic Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame.

Framed jerseys with the No. 33 and 54 will be on display in the trophy case in the Wehr Center lobby.
