Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lakeland in control in all phases in convincing sweep of Marian

The Lakeland University women's volleyball team continued its dominance in victory, owning almost every aspect of the match and making quick work of Marian University in a three-set sweep Saturday early afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies needed just over an hour to defeat the Sabres 25-16, 25-8, 25-15, improving to 14-7 overall and 4-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland improved to 9-3 over its last 12 matches, and all nine of those wins have come by sweep for the Muskies.

The Muskies trailed just once in the match, falling behind 1-0 to start the third set. Otherwise, Lakeland was in charge, hitting an efficient .272 with 36 kills to just 11 errors while Marian hit an unsightly -.133 with 12 kills and 24 errors. The Muskies also added nine blocks plus five service aces, including four from Brianna Johnson (Sr.-Altoona, Wis.).

Lakeland essentially took full charge of the match late in the first set and early in the second. Marian (7-10 overall, 3-5 NACC) had cut the Muskies' margin to 15-11 in the first set when the hosts scored three straight points and never let the lead slip below six the rest of the set. Lakeland then jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set, a run that included three kills from Megan Goeser (So.-Plymouth, Wis.) and two more from Shannon Bishop (Jr.-River Grove, Ill.), and the Muskies then closed out the set with the final 10 points, with Johnson contributing a pair of aces and Shelby Welsh (Sr.-Ogallala, Neb.) finishing it with a kill.

Welsh finished with a team-high 10 kills and also added 13 digs. Goeser also added nine kills and Bishop finished with eight kills plus seven digs and four block assists.

Emma Bruder (Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) also finished with 13 digs and Neenah Primas (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) added 24 assists plus eight digs and two solo blocks. Emilie Schartner (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) also chipped in four kills and four blocks (one solo, three assisted).

Alexandra Meidl finished with four kills to lead Marian, which did not finish with a single hitter posting a positive attack percentage. Amber Yahr finished with 12 digs and seven assists and Sara Komosa added 11 digs plus three blocks (one solo, two assisted).

Lakeland is back home again Friday night when it welcomes Rockford University for an NACC match at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
