The Lakeland University men's basketball team made enough free throws in the final minutes and survived a final Benedictine University possession in the waning seconds, holding on for a 90-88 win Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies scored just one field goal in the final 6 minutes, 39 seconds but went to the free throw line 17 times in that stretch, making 10. Lakeland won its second straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game and improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Muskies and Eagles were almost as close as can be all game long, with the game featuring 19 ties and 12 lead changes and neither team holding a lead bigger than six points. Lakeland did hold the point much of the second half and took the lead for good when
Jequan Pegeese (
So.-Beloit, Wis.) split two free throws to make it 77-76 with 5:21 to play.
The Muskies appeared to be in good shape down the stretch when
Carlos Campos (
Jr.-Janesville, Wis.) hit a step-back three-pointer-to snap a five-minute drought without a field goal and make it 86-80 with 1:47 to play. Benedictine (1-4 overall, 1-1 NACC) came back to get within 87-86 on a jumper by Michael Johnson with 34 seconds left, though, and then caught a break when
Garrett Duffin (
Sr.-Princeton, Ill.) missed the second of two free throws, but
Isaac Anderson (
Jr.-Linden, Wis.) grabbed the offensive rebound and saved another possession.
Pegeese than hit two foul shots with 28 seconds left before Eric Grygo scored with 13 seconds left to make it a two-point game again. Anderson then missed two free throws with eight seconds left to give the guests a chance, but Lakeland knocked the ball away on a final Eagles drive to the basket, with the ball going out of bounds as time expired.
The Muskies shot 50% for the game, hitting 26 of 52 shots, and took almost as many free throws, making 31 of 40 from the line (77.5%). Lakeland also committed just 12 turnovers, six less than Benedictine, and the Muskies finished with a 21-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Campos scored 22 points and was joined in double figures by Pegeese with 14, Duffin with 12 and
Zach Hasenstein (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) adding 11.
Grygo led all scorers with 32 points, making 14 of 15 shots from the field, and also added a game-high 14 rebounds. The Eagles shot 50.8% as a team, making 31 of 61 shots.
Lakeland is on the road next when it travels to face Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
