The Lakeland University women's basketball team held Benedictine University to 25.9% shooting in the second half, paving the way to a 60-50 comeback win Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies broke a tie late in the fourth quarter and finished the game on a 12-2 run, holding the Eagles without a field goal for the final 3 minutes, 48 seconds. Lakeland earned its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season, coming back from eight points down late in the first half to snap a brief two-game losing streak.
The Muskies held the Eagles (5-2 overall, 1-1 NACC) to seven made field goals in the second half in 27 attempts. Benedictine also committed 10 of its 23 turnovers in the final 20 minutes, including eight in the third quarter.
The roots of Lakeland's rally started late in the first half. The Muskies (4-2 overall, 1-1 NACC) trailed 29-21 late in the second quarter but held Benedictine scoreless the final 3:58 to close within 29-25 at halftime.
Lakeland then outscored the Eagles 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 42-34 lead, but the guests clawed back in the fourth and tied the game at 48-48 on a three-pointer by D'Asia Williams with 3:50 to play.
Lakeland went back ahead when
Megan Will (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored in the paint with 3:40 left in the game, and then stretched the lead out when
Abby Nylund (
So.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) hit the first three-pointer of the game with 2:27 left. Nylund added two free throws with 57 seconds to play making it 55-48, and Benedictine got no closer than five the rest of the way.
The Muskies trailed for a good share of the game, including the entire first quarter until
Miranda Jacobson (
Sr.-Felch, Mich.) split two free throws with six seconds left in the period to tie the game at 15-15. Lakeland briefly took a two-point lead twice early in the second quarter before Benedictine surged ahead and led going into halftime. The Eagles came into the game shooting just 23.1% from three-point range but made six of their first nine from behind the arc in the first half before cooling off the rest of the way and finishing at 7-for-24 (29.2%).
Will scored 18 points despite playing through foul trouble, making 9 of 14 shots from the field. Jacobson finished with 13 points plus a career-high 15 rebounds and added five assists and
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) added eight points plus three assists off the bench, including six points in the first half to help the Muskies stay close.
Lakeland shot 39.6% from the field (21 of 53) and held Benedictine to 18 of 53 shooting (34.0%). The Eagles were led by D'Asia Williams with 14 points and six rebounds, and Alex Fanning added five points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Muskies are home again Tuesday night when they host Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m. in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
