Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lakeland takes over in overtime to get past Concordia

Abby Nylund (So.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) scored her first points of the game with a three-pointer to start overtime and the Lakeland University women's basketball team led the rest of the way to finally outlast Concordia University Wisconsin 77-70 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night.

The Muskies needed extra time to finish the task, but five more minutes of work was a small price to pay for just the second win over Concordia in the teams' last 15 meetings. Lakeland gained an important win early in its NACC schedule against one of the conference's regular contenders and defeated the Falcons at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium for the first time since 2012.

The game went to overtime after Concordia's Emily Hafemann banked in a three-pointer from the right wing with 2.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 66-66. Lakeland (5-2 overall, 2-1 NACC) actually had a chance to still win it in regulation, advancing the ball to the frontcourt with a timeout and then getting Megan Will (So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) a chance near the basket, but her shot was blocked just before time expired.

Nylund hit a three-pointer just 12 seconds into the extra session, though, and the Muskies never trailed again. She added two free throws later and Lakeland hit 6 of 8 from the line in overtime while also holding Concordia to just one field goal and four points total in the extra frame.

Lakeland held a slim lead most of the night but couldn't put away Concordia in regulation. The Muskies led for 32 minutes 56 seconds of the game, including most of the first half, but CUW came back from a seven-point first half deficit and the teams were tied at 30 at halftime.

The Falcons (3-3 overall, 2-2 NACC) then came out hot in the third quarter, with Baylee Barker making four straight three-pointers, the last one putting CUW ahead 45-37 with 4:48 left in the period. Lakeland rallied right back, though, and led 51-47 after Will's offensive rebound and putback just before the quarter buzzer.

The Muskies held a significant advantage inside as the game went on, piling up some big numbers. Will scored a career-high 27 points and added 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Miranda Jacobson (Sr.-Felch, Mich.) added 11 points and 12 rebounds plus six assists, and both were especially big in the final 25 minutes as Lakeland finished with a 28-15 rebound advantage in the second half and overtime.

Lakeland also shot well from long distance and in particular received a big contribution off the bench from Kaity Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.). The sophomore hit all four of her three-point attempts on the way to a career-high 12 points, and the Muskies made 7 of 13 from three-point range as a team (53.8%).

Amanda Majewski (Jr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) also finished with a season-high 15 points and added a career-high nine rebounds. Majewski also made 8 of 9 from the free throw line, and as a team the Muskies made 14 of 17 from the line (82.4%).

Lakeland shot 43.1% for the game, making 28 of 65 shots, and also outrebounded Concordia 47-34. The Falcons shot 36.1% (26 of 72) and were led by Barker, who set a new career high for herself with 27 points.

The Muskies are home again Saturday when they host Marian University at 2 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
