Megan Will (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored 16 points and added nine rebounds and the Lakeland University women's basketball team pounded it inside on offense and again was stubborn on defense in a 60-47 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies knocked off the rust from a 10-day layoff, overcoming a slow start to take control in the second quarter and early in the third. Lakeland won its sixth straight game and improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, winning a battle with the Raiders for position in the standings.
Will scored all 16 of her points in the paint, making 8 of 13 field goals, and the Muskies scored 19 of their 25 field goals in the paint area. Lakeland posted a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint, consistently capitalizing on post-ups, drives or cuts to the basket and shooting 45.5% (25 of 55), its second-best shooting percentage of the season.
MSOE (6-4 overall, 4-2 NACC) led much of the first quarter before the Muskies finished with a pair of baskets in close by Will, the second with two seconds left in the quarter putting the hosts ahead 11-9 after one period. Lakeland then built a 30-21 lead by halftime, mixing its work inside with a trio of three-pointers in a 19-point quarter.
The Muskies started the third quarter strong, too, and took a 41-25 lead on a drive by
Amanda Majewski (
Jr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) with 5:35 left in the period. The Raiders heated up for a time and made a run to get within 44-37 by the end of the third, but Will scored on two straight trips and
Miranda Jacobson (
Sr.-Felch, Mich.) followed with another bucket to make it 50-37, and MSOE never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
Jacobson chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists and both
Janai' Farr (
So.-Racine, Wis.) and
Kylie Birkholz (
Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) added seven points each off the bench, where Lakeland also posted a 23-12 advantage.
The Muskies also held MSOE to 35.3% shooting, with the guests making just 18 of 51 shots. Raiders leading scorer Jamie Spanbauer was held to seven points, eight below her average, and Kayla Barreto was the only member of her team in double figures scoring with 10 points.
Lakeland is home again Wednesday for its first game of the new year when it welcomes Rockford University for a 7 p.m. tip.
