Muskies win at Finlandia; will host Concordia in NACC quarterfinals

HANCOCK, Mich. – Shakur Jinad (So.-Chicago, Ill.) scored a career-high 27 points and the Lakeland University men's basketball team finished up its regular season with an 88-70 win over Finlandia (Mich.) University Saturday afternoon.

The Muskies bookended their regular season with a pair of wins over the Lions, who they also defeated at home in their season opener back in November, and now get ready for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. Lakeland found out on Saturday that its opponent will be No. 5 seed Concordia University Wisconsin, with the teams meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies (16-9 overall) go in the postseason after being challenged by the Lions before pulling away in the second half. Finlandia (4-16 overall) held a 39-37 lead at halftime, but Lakeland outscored the hosts 51-31 in the final 20 minutes, including a big finish to the game.

Lakeland had built a 13-point lead midway through the second half before Finlandia fought back and trailed just 67-64 after a layup by Rakeem Beal with 7 minutes, 15 seconds remaining. The Muskies put the game away, though, with the next 13 points to build their biggest lead of the game at the time at 80-64 with 3:44 left.

Jinad played a huge role in the run, scoring 10 of the 13 points. It was part of an effective performance throughout, as the sophomore hit 12 of 17 shots and added five rebounds.

Jequan Pegeese (Fr.-Beloit, Wis.) also added a career-best 15 points off the bench, hitting 4 of 6 from three-piont range. The Muskies as a team shot 43.8% (32 of 73) but hit 11 of 26 from three-point range (42.3%).

Pat McDonald (Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) also scored 12 points and added six assists while Garrett Duffin (Jr.-Princeton, Ill.) scored seven and added a game-high and career-best 12 rebounds.

Brandon Robinette scored 18 points to lead Finlandia, which made 27 of 65 shots (41.5%). The Lions also hit 8 of 22 from three-point range (36.4%), but seven of the makes came in the first half, when they led by as many as five.

The Muskies will enter the NACC Tournament as the fourth seed of six teams in the field. Lakeland split a pair of games with Concordia Wisconsin during the season, winning 91-88 at home back on Nov. 25 and losing 90-76 on the road in Mequon just over a month ago on Jan. 13.
