Lakeland tagged with first loss on Florida trip by Wilmington

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Lakeland University baseball team had little go right as it took its first loss of the season with a 29-5 defeat by Wilmington (Ohio) College Monday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Games.

The Muskies saw their undefeated start to the season halted at four games as the Quakers erupted for 10 runs in the first inning and had two more big innings later. Lakeland dropped to 4-1 as it heads into two off days on its spring break trip.

Wilmington (3-4 overall) scored 10 times in the first inning, aided by four hits, four walks, two errors and a hit batman. The Quakers also added seven runs in the third inning and nine more in the fifth as eight Lakeland pitchers struggled to keep their opponent off the board.

Wilmington finished with 18 hits but also was helped by 11 walks, four hit batters and three Muskies errors. The Quakers built a 19-0 lead after three innings and easily ended the originally scheduled nine-inning game in seven innings on account of the 10-run rule.

Lakeland did have success hitting the ball with 12 hits, just six less than Wilmington. Drew Richard (Sr.-Kieler, Wis.) went 3-for-3, including a two-run single as part of the Muskies' four-run fourth inning. Justin Wahl Adame (Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) and Brandon Punzel (So.-Escanaba, Mich.) also added two hits each and scored a run.

Jordan Johnson (So.-Riverton, Utah) took the loss for the Muskies, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing seven runs (two earned). Christian Foss (Sr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) came on in relief late and had the most success of any Lakeland pitcher, striking out the side in order in the sixth.

The Muskies get back to the diamond Thursday when they face Bethel (Minn.) University at 8 a.m. Central time, followed by a game with UW-Stout at 11 a.m.
