Johns Hopkins edges Lakeland in pair of pitching duels

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Lakeland University baseball team held its own in a pair of pitching duels with a nationally ranked team but came up short in both ends of a doubleheader with Johns Hopkins (Md.) University on Friday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Games.

The Muskies were defeated by scores of 1-0 on 4-1 by the Blue Jays, who are ranked 21st in NCAA Division III in the NCBWA/D3baseball.com top 25 poll. Lakeland dropped to 4-5 on its season-opening spring break trip with one game left to play Saturday before returning home.

Starter Connor Hilburn (Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) in particular was a hard-luck losing pitcher in the first game, as he and Blue Jays hurler Preston Betz tossed twin gems. Both allowed just three hits each, and the game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Hopkins right fielder Zach Jaffe led off with a double, pinch runner Chris DeGiacomo moved to third on a sacrifice and then scored on a fielder's choice at the end, as Lakeland's attempt to turn an inning-ending double play was late.

Hilburn was outstanding, allowing just three hits while striking out five and stranding just two base runners, matching Betz zero for zero on the scoreboard until the end. Betz also tossed a three-hitter, striking out 13 and never allowing a runner past second base. Jacob Plucinski (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) had two of Lakeland's three hits.

The Muskies were also shut down in the second game on just two hits, as the Blue Jays' Nick Bodner and Jake Griffin combined on the pitching effort. Lakeland did get on the board in the fifth as Alberto Oliveras (Fr.-Fort Myers, Fla.) led off with a solo home run to left, his first collegiate homer to get the Muskies within 2-1.

Dylan Royce (So.-Nekoosa, Wis.) started and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) with three strikeouts. Ryan Oharriz (Jr.-Pembroke Pines, Fla.) came on in relief in the seventh to get the final two outs.

Jack Banks (So.-Mountain View, Calif.) reached base twice at the plate with a single and a walk. Dillon Bowman paced the Johns Hopkins (7-4 overall) attack, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
