FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lakeland University finished its spring break trip with a 5-0 loss to Alfred State (N.Y.) College in its final game at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Games.
The Muskies were unable to cash in on several good chances early and Alfred State opened a close game up in the later stages on the way to the win. Lakeland concluded its Florida trip with a 4-6 record.
The Pioneers (3-11 overall) led 1-0 going into the sixth inning but scored three times to open up the lead. Brody Burdett delivered the biggest blow with a run-scoring double, part of his three RBIs on the day.
Jack Banks (
So.-Mountain View, Calif.) had held Alfred State at bay most of the day before that, allowing just the one run over five innings, and he was one out from getting out of the sixth trailing just 2-0 until Burdett's hit. Banks wound up taking the loss, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits and four runs with four strikeouts.
Lakeland had its best chances in the second and third innings. The Muskies put two on with one out in the second but could not score after
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was hit by a pitch and
Alberto Oliveras (
Fr.-Fort Myers, Fla.) walked.
Lakeland then loaded the bases with two outs in the third but was unable to score again.
Drew Richard (
Sr.-Kieler, Wis.) walked,
Travis Regalado (
Jr.-Willcox, Ariz.) was hit by a pitch and Hilburn walked, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.
Hilburn, Olivera and Richard all had a hit and a walk to lead the Muskies hitters. Richard also added a pair of stolen bases.
Christopher Leopold (
Sr.-Bolingbrook, Ill.) came on in relief late and pitched three innings, allowing two hits and a run.
