AURORA, Ill. – Lakeland University was held to four hits in both games and Aurora University used big innings to pull away and sweep both ends of a baseball doubleheader Monday afternoon.
The Spartans won the first game 16-0 in seven innings and then added an 8-1 win in the second game. The Muskies lost both games in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference-opening twinbill and their first games since the end of their spring break trip to Florida 16 days ago.
Lakeland (4-8 overall) wasn't able to get much going offensively in either game. The Muskies did not advance a runner past second base until the eighth inning of the second game, when
Drew Richard (
Sr.-Kieler, Wis.) doubled and
Travis Regalado (
Jr.-Willcox, Ariz.) singled him home for the team's lone run of the day.
Aurora (15-5 overall, 3-1 NACC) also had success at the plate, piling up 33 hits in two games. The Spartans also had big innings in both games, scoring four times in the fourth and eight more runs in the fifth of the opener, and then tallying five times in the bottom of the third in the second contest to take a 6-0 lead.
Richard and
Matt Benninghoff (
Jr.-Highland, Ind.) both had two hits each on the day to lead Lakeland at the plate, including Richard going 2-for-3 in the second game with a walk.
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) took the loss in the first game, allowing eight hits and eight runs (seven earned) with two strikeouts in 3 /3 innings.
Jack Banks (
So.-Mountain View, Calif.) started the second game and allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) with two strikeouts in three innings.
The Muskies were scheduled to face Benedictine University tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at noon, but that game has been postponed due to forecasted cold and wintry weather. A makeup date will be scheduled but has not been set at this time.
