FOND DU LAC – Marian University took big leads early in both games and went on to sweep the Lakeland University baseball team in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at Marian's Herr-Baker Field.
The Sabres won by scores of 16-6 and 12-2 as the Muskies were swept in a twinbill for the second time in three days. Lakeland saw its record drop to 8-20 overall and is now 4-14 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with one final conference doubleheader remaining Saturday against Rockford University.
Marian (15-19 overall, 11-7 NACC) was on the attack all night and finished with 34 hits combined over the two games. The Sabres also broke out to leads early in both games, putting the Muskies in trail mode much of the afternoon and evening.
Marian scored six times in the first inning of game one and added three more in the second and two in the third for an 11-0 lead after just three frames. The hosts also answered an RBI single by
Travis Regalado (
Jr.-Willcox, Ariz.) to score
Drew Richard (
Sr.-Kieler, Wis.) in the top of the first in game two, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and adding three in both the second and third innings for an 8-1 lead.
Lakeland did reach Marian pitching for 11 hits in the first game, with Regalado,
Matt Benninghoff (
Jr.-Highland, Ind.) and
Alberto Oliveras (
Fr.-Fort Myers, Fla.) all leading with two hits each. Benninghoff also drove in a pair of runs.
The Muskies also added nine hits in the second game, including four from Regalado, who went 4-for-4 and drove in both Lakeland runs.
Connor Hilburn (
Jr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and
Justin Wahl Adame (
Fr.-Riverside, Calif.) also added two hits each.
Lakeland is back on the field again Wednesday when it faces NCAA Division I UW-Milwaukee for a single nine-inning game starting at 3 p.m. The game will be played at Henry Aaron Field in Glendale, just north of Milwaukee.
