Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lakeland squeezes past Finlandia to take win streak to three

Bonny Figueroa (Jr.-El Cajon, Calif.) hit a long free kick that found its way to the back of the net, giving the Lakeland University men's soccer team the only goal it would need in a 1-0 win over Finlandia (Mich.) University Monday night at Taylor Field.

The Muskies won their third straight match, the first time winning three in a row since 2013, and also completed a sweep of a two-game home-and-home with the Lions over the past eight days. Lakeland also defeated Finlandia by an identical score last Monday at the Lions' home in Hancock, Mich.

Figueroa scored the lone goal of the match on a free kick in the 70th minute. From 50 yards out on the right side, he lofted a high, hard kick that sailed just over two crossing players and Finlandia goalkeeper Noah Raisanen, bounced and settled in the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Muskies held the rest of the way, weathering a last Finlandia attempt in the final seconds. A free kick with 18 seconds left led to Ricardo Almanza having a header attempt that was stopped by Tyson Carter (Fr.-Yakima, Wash.), who then was able to run out the rest of the clock to finish the game.

A game that featured a lot of play in the middle of the field had few premium opportunities for either team. Ryoto Kinoshita (Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) had a pair of opportunities early in the first half, while Carter had to make just one save in the first 86 minutes before Finlandia made a couple rushes late.

Lakeland outshot Finlandia 14-4, including an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. Kinoshita attempted six of the Muskies' 14 shots, while eight others added one shot each.

Carter made three saves for his second straight shutout. Raisanen made seven saves for Finlandia, which dropped to 1-4 after its third 1-0 loss of the season.

Lakeland is home again Wednesday night when it faces Ripon College as part of a women's/men's doubleheader. The women's match will get underway at Taylor Field at 5 p.m. with the men's match to follow at 7:30 p.m.
