Ripon College curbed the recent success of the Lakeland men's and women's soccer teams, coming into Taylor Field and winning both ends of a women's/men's doubleheader Wednesday night.
The Red Hawks first took the women's match 4-1 and then came through with a late goal to claim a 1-0 victory in the men's duel nightcap. Ripon prevented both Muskies teams from earning their fourth wins of the season and stopped a three-game winning streak for the Lakeland men's squad and a brief two-game streak for the Muskies women's team.
The Red Hawks took control of the women's match early in the first half with a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes. Paige Pierce received a good pass ahead through the defense by defender Becky Schwindt, leading her to a one-on-one with goalkeeper
Erin Tomlinson (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.) that she won for a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes in.
The rest of Ripon's scoring came from Brianna Schnell, who posted a hat trick, including a pair of goals early in the second half to put the Red Hawks' lead to 4-0.
The Muskies (3-2-1 overall) got their lone goal in the 78th minute. Some work in the midfield by
Stephanie Figueroa (
Sr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) and
Jenna Borts (
So.-Oak Creek, Wis.) got the ball to
Hope Cerney (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) on the left side, and she fed a long pass ahead to
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.), who one-timed a shot from a sharp angle on the left wing just inside the right post.
Lakeland was unable to cut into the deficit any further, falling in a game where Ripon (1-2 overall) posted a 21-7 shooting advantage. Tomlinson made eight saves in goal, while three Red Hawk goalkeepers combined to stop three shots.
The men's match was even as can be throughout until Ripon (2-3 overall) scored the only goal late in the second half. Grant Grywalsky gathered the ball after a Muskies header of a throw-in, then dribbled through two defenders and hit a hard shot from 16 yards out. The ball hit lunging goalkeeper
Tyson Carter (
Fr.-Yakima, Wash.) and ricocheted into the net with just over seven minutes to play.
Lakeland (3-2 overall) had one of its best chances early in the second half, when
Kaier Hampton (
Fr.-Racine, Wis.) poked the ball ahead over a defender, then worked to get it away from another near the end line while Ripon goalkeeper Cole Jurish came out of the goal. Hampton got it to
Alex Kelly (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) inside the box, but his one-time shot was cleared away by a Ripon defender.
Kelly and
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) both finished with three shot attempts each. The two teams finished in a 10-10 deadlock in shot attempts, though the Muskies held a 7-1 margin in corner kicks. Carter made five saves for Lakeland, while Jurish made four saves for Ripon.
The Lakeland women's team is home for its next match Saturday when it welcomes Finlandia (Mich.) University for a kickoff bright and early at 9 a.m. The Muskies men are next on the road at St. Norbert College Saturday at 11 a.m.
