Rachel Wilson (
So.-Gilbert, Ariz.) scored her first collegiate goal to get Lakeland University on the board and on its way to a 3-0 victory over Blackburn (Ill.) College in a non-conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at a warm and humid Taylor Field.
The Muskies controlled play most of the way but needed time for it to show on the scoreboard, finally broke through late in the first half and adding on slowly in the second half. Lakeland won its fourth match of the season, though, and improved to 4-3-1 overall this season.
The Muskies outshot the Beavers (0-6 overall) 23-5 and finished with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. Three shots hit off the crossbar and bounced away, and it was yet another shot off the bar that got Lakeland on the board.
Normally a defender, Wilson moved up to a forward position late in the first half, and received a pass from
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) in the middle of the field. From straight on 25 yards out, Wilson struck a shot that hit the crossbar, then came almost straight down, at just enough of an angle to hit off of Blackburn goalkeeper Anicca Mackay-Slavin and roll over the end line for a goal.
Hasko was involved again in the Muskies' second goal, which came in the 61st minute. Her pass through the defense from near midfield connected with
Hope Cerney (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) on the run outside the left hash marks, and Cerney took three touches and beat the goalkeeper inside the far post to make it 2-0.
Lakeland added a final goal with just 11 minutes to play. Mackay-Slavin was unable to corral a cross from the left corner into the box by Cerney. The ball rattled around on the ground, and
Elizabeth Siebert (
Jr.-Mount Pulaski, Ill.) got a piece of it, getting it to
Karisa Rowland (
Jr.-Peoria, Ariz.), who poked it past the keeper for the final goal.
The Muskies had chances to a number of other chances in the match to add to their total, early and later. Both
Emely Ortega (
Fr.-South Beloit, Ill.) and
Jenna Borts (
So.-Oak Creek, Wis.) hit the crossbar with shots early in the first half, including Ortega just 6:47 into the match. Cerney also pinged the bar in the second half.
Grace Daehling (
So.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made her first start this season in goal and came up with the shutout, stopping four shots. Jasmine Tillman had four of the five shots for the Beavers, who were playing a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference team for the second straight day after falling at Alverno 2-1 on Saturday.
Lakeland now gets ready for its NACC opener on Wednesday when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
