Box Score Lawrence University's Jawad Weleidat scored the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and the Lakeland University men's soccer team came out on the wrong end of another close game in a 3-2 loss Monday night at Taylor Memorial Field.
Weleidat's second goal of the match with 1 minute, 49 seconds left helped the Vikings break a tie for the third time in the game and left the Muskies with little time to put up another equalizer. Lakeland dropped to 3-4 overall after its third defeat by a single goal, while Lawrence won its second straight match, improving to 2-5.
An entertaining game with plenty of back and forth action was full of long passes and challenges by the goalkeepers. Both teams had ample pushes deep into the opponents' offensive ends, and they combined for 31 shots, including 16 by Lakeland.
Weleidat opened the scoring in the first half, benefitting from a good pass from Will Nichols on the left wing and punching the ball into an open net in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead. Lakeland came right back just over three minutes later, though, as
Armando De Luna (
Fr.-Yuma, Ariz.) sent a ball from near midfield to a charging
John Bentler (
Jr.-Seattle, Wash.) on a run down the right side. Bentler chased it down and finished past goalkeeper Hunter Lanton to tie the game at 23:05 of the match.
The Muskies got the better of play for most of the first half, but it was Lawrence taking a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute. A foul inside the box led to a penalty kick, which Brendan Vellenga converted inside the left post.
The score stayed that way until halftime, when the teams took a break shortened to 10 minutes in part due to an infestation of mosquitoes swarming Taylor Field. It took less than a minute out of the break for Lakeland to tie the game again, though, as
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) stole the ball 40 yards from the goal and fired quickly over the goalkeeper Lanton, who was out of the net, and his shot hit the back left corner of the net to make the score 2-2.
The Muskies' best chances the rest of the way came midway through the second half on shots from close in by
Tekele Lehman (
Fr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) and
Alex Kelly (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.). Lakeland could not convert, though, and with the match looking destined for overtime the Vikings finally scored when Weleidat came up with the ball on the left side of the box, took some space and ripped a shot past goalkeeper
Tyson Carter (
Fr.-Yakima, Wash.).
Bonny Figueroa (
Jr.-El Cajon, Calif.) led Lakeland with four shot attempts with Kelly adding three attempts. Carter made six saves in goal while Lanton saved five shots for the victorious Vikings.
The Muskies take to the road Wednesday when they travel to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee in both teams' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
