Box Score EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka (Ill.) College scored a pair of goals in the second half and the Lakeland University men's soccer team took a tough 2-1 loss to open its season Saturday afternoon.

The new-look Muskies held the lead for more than 55 minutes but dropped a narrow decision in the first match under new head coach Rick Mobley. Lakeland's squad features just six players who have played for the team before this season.

Lakeland scored first in the match, needing just over two minutes to get on the board for the first time this season. Freshman Denver Roberts (East Troy, Wis.) scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from fellow frosh Kaier Hampton (Racine, Wis.) to make it 1-0 just 2 minutes 25 seconds in.

The Muskies would never score again despite a decided advantage in opportunities. Lakeland outshot Eureka 19-10, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Bonny Figueroa (Jr.-El Cajon, Calif.) attempted four shots and put two on goal, Alex Kelly (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) shot three times and Andy Simms (Fr.-La Crosse, Wis.) also added two shots on goal. The pressure was especially heavy in the second half when Lakeland put eight of its nine shots on goal.

The Red Devils tied the match in the 58th minute on a goal by Diego Cintora, and the hosts took the lead less than seven minutes later as Michael Hansen scored with an assist from Cintora for what turned out to be the game-winner.

Tyson Carter (Fr.-Yakima, Wash.) made one save in goal for Lakeland in his collegiate debut. Alex Yates made seven saves in the second half to get the win for Eureka.

Lakeland tries again for its first win when it travels to face Finlandia (Mich.) University on Labor Day for a noon Central time kickoff in Hancock, Mich.
