FOND DU LAC – Marian University scored just over six minutes into the game and the Lakeland University men's soccer team played from behind the rest of the way in a 4-0 loss Wednesday night.
The Muskies lost their third straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match as the Sabres scored twice in both halves, including a pair of insurance goals in the final 19 minutes. Marian picked up its first NACC win of the season in three tries, controlling the first half and winning play in the second even as Lakeland had better chances in the final 45 minutes.
Chris Nelson scored for the Sabres (3-4-1 overall, 1-2 NACC) just 6:05 into the match, cleaning up a rebound from a shot off the post. He would also add an assist late in the match, with his crossing pass leading to Brandon Mancini's second goal with 1:50 left in the match.
Mancini also scored unassisted in the 25th minute, and Jack Ruscheinski added a goal at 71:33 of the match. That was enough for the hosts, with the Sabres finishing with a 21-9 shot advantage and Marian goalkeeper Ian Chacon stopping all six shots he faced on goal.
Lakeland (3-7 overall, 0-3 NACC) had few good chances in the first half, with
Shousei Suzuki (
Jr.-Tokyo, Japan) putting the only shot on goal in the opening period. The Muskies did get more chances in the second half and particularly late, with
Hunter Gorges (
Fr.-New London, Wis.),
Carson Teske (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.),
Ryoto Kinoshita (
Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) and
Thomas Sanuk (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) all with attempts saved in the final five minutes.
Tyson Carter (
Fr.-Yakima, Wash.) made seven saves in goal in playing the whole match. Gorges, Kinoshita and
Charles Apostolik (
Sr.-New Castle, Colo.) all had two shot attempts each.
The Muskies are back home at Taylor Field Saturday for a women's/men's doubleheader on Homecoming. The Lakeland women's team hosts Dominican University at 5 p.m., and the Muskies men will face the Stars at 7:30 p.m.
