Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Muskies top Finlandia 1-0 for first men’s soccer win of season

HANCOCK, Mich. – Hunter Gorges (Fr.-New London, Wis.) scored in the 24th minute and the Lakeland University men's soccer team made it stand up the rest of the way for a 1-0 victory over Finlandia (Mich.) University on Labor Day in the Upper Peninsula.

The Muskies earned their first win of the season and first victory since late in the 2016 season. It also was the first win under first-year coach Rick Mobley.

For the second straight match, Lakeland outshot its opponent by a considerable margin. The Muskies posted a 16-7 advantage in shot attempts and also finished with a 9-3 lead in shots on goal.

Gorges scored midway through the first half, a half in which Lakeland outshot the host Lions 11-2. He cleaned up a rebound after a shot by Bonny Figueroa (Jr.-El Cajon, Calif.) was stopped by goalkeeper Noah Raisenen, finding the net for his first collegiate goal.

The Muskies held the lead the rest of the way, even after brief surges early and then late in the second half by Finlandia. The Lions had four corner kicks and three shot attempts in the first six minutes of the second half, and had two chances in the final three minutes as well.

Austin Edge (Sr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) and Tyson Carter (Fr.-Yakima, Wash.) combined on the shutout in goal for Lakeland. Edge started and played until a collision with a Finlandia player in the 63rd minute resulted in him leaving the match, with Carter coming on and finishing the match.

Figueroa attempted seven shots, with three on goal, and Gorges added three shots all on net. Carson Teske (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also had a pair of opportunities with shots on goal.

Lakeland now gets ready for its home opener when it welcomes Maranatha Baptist University for a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.
