Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Muskies’ work pays off late for 3-0 win over Maranatha Baptist

Ryoto Kinoshita (Jr.-Kanagawa, Japan) scored the icebreaker deep into the second half and also added two assists as the Lakeland University men's soccer team won its second straight match, defeating Maranatha Baptist University 3-0 Saturday night at Taylor Field.

The Muskies controlled play much of the night and it paid off on the scoreboard to the tune of three goals in the final 16 minutes. Lakeland has consecutive wins for the first time since the 2016 season and also won for the first time at Taylor Field in the home opener for its second season playing there.

The Muskies (2-1 overall) held possession most of the way and finished with a 23-6 advantage in shots for the match. Sabercats goalkeeper Andrew Taylor made eight saves and the guests were able to stay tied well into the second half.

Lakeland finally broke through with less than 16 minutes left in the second half. Lizandro Gallegos (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) came up with the ball in the left corner in Maranatha's end, and he pass to Kinoshita on the left wing, who fired a shot from an angle past Taylor for his goal as a Muskie.

It took Lakeland just over six minutes to score again, and Kinoshita was involved again. This time he was on the right side, and his cross into the box was headed in by Shousei Suzuki (Jr.-Tokyo, Japan) for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

The Muskies added one more insurance goal in the 86th minute on another header. Kinoshita sent another cross into the box and Alex Kelly (Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) scored on the header for his first collegiate goal.

The match was scoreless at halftime despite both teams having opportunities early. Maranatha's Bryant Sturgill had the first good chance less than seven minutes in, but his header redirect from close in was stopped by Tyson Carter (Fr.-Yakima, Wash.).

Lakeland started to apply pressure less than two minutes later with a hard shot from defender Dylan Lange (Sr.-Geneva, Ill.), and the Muskies had no better chance in the first 45 minutes than when Kelly ripped a laser from the right side outside the penalty area and hit the left post.

Carter made three saves to record his first complete collegiate shutout. Kelly and Suzuki both led Lakeland with five shot attempts.

The Muskies are home again on Monday when they host Finlandia (Mich.) University at 7 p.m. in the second game of the teams' home-and-home with two games in eight days. Lakeland won the first meeting 1-0 on Labor Day in the Upper Peninsula.
