Muskies top UW-Oshkosh but drop two at UWSP tourney

STEVENS POINT – Shannon Bishop (Jr.-River Grove, Wis.) received all-tournament team honors but the Lakeland University women's volleyball team came out on the wrong end of a pair of five-set matches Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Invitational.

The Muskies went to the wire right down to the end of the fifth set in both matches on Saturday. Carroll University edged Lakeland 21-25, 25-10, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13 to start the day, and later Saint Mary's (Minn.) University staved off a match point to top the Muskies 14-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 16-14.

The losses capped a weekend when Lakeland went 1-2 after also picking up a solid four-set win at UW-Oshkosh on Friday. The Muskies are now 5-3 overall heading into their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule opener Wednesday night at home against Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m.

Bishop piled up 16 kills against Carroll and 17 more against St. Mary's and hit .260 over the two matches, providing the main source of firepower. She also finished in double figures in digs in both matches, including 17 digs against Carroll.

In all, Bishop finished with a trio of double-doubles for the weekend. She also added 12 kills and 22 digs against UW-Oshkosh in the Muskies' 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21 victory on Friday, the team's second this season over a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Shelby Welsh (Sr.-Ogallala, Neb.) joined Bishop with three double-doubles in kills and digs. The finished with a career-high 28 digs and also added 12 kills in the win over Oshkosh, and Welsh also finished with 12 kills and 14 digs against Carroll and 11 more plus 16 digs versus St. Mary's.

Neenah Primas (So.-Oostburg, Wis.) led the team in assists all three matches with a high of 48 against St. Mary's. Emma Bruder (Sr.-Frankfort, Ill.) piled up 53 digs over three matches with a high of 23 against St. Mary's, and Brianna Johnson (Sr.-Altoona, Wis.) also added 45 digs, including a career-high 21 in the second match Saturday.
