Edgewood College was on fire shooting from start to finish and the Lakeland University women's basketball team was unable to match the Eagles' torrid marksmanship in a 72-58 loss Thursday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
The Eagles spoiled the Muskies' first home appearance in two weeks, making themselves at home in the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium by shooting 58.0% from the field. Edgewood defeated Lakeland for the second time this season and improved to 12-7 overall and 9-5 in the NACC, while the Muskies dropped to 14-4 overall and 10-3 in conference.
The Eagles hit 29 of 50 shots for the game, never trailed and seemingly had an answer every time the Muskies attempted to draw near. Edgewood opened making 9 of 14 shots in the first quarter (64.3%) to lead 21-13 after 10 minutes, and it never really cooled down, shooting at least 53.8% in all four periods.
The Eagles made hay inside and on the fast break. Twenty-three of their 29 buckets were inside the three-point arc, and Edgewood also scored 14 points on the break, including a pair of pull-up three-pointers by Abby Shane in the first quarter that helped build the early lead.
Edgewood played at a fast and frenetic pace that gave Lakeland an opening, with the guests committing 26 turnovers. The Muskies were unable to take advantage, though, shooting 34.8% (23 of 66). The Eagles also posted a sizable 42-26 rebounding advantage and allowed Lakeland to score just three points total off nine offensive rebounds.
Edgewood led 31-23 at halftime despite 18 first half turnovers and held a double-digit lead almost the entire second half. Lakeland briefly cut a 14-point deficit down to nine in the third quarter when
Janai' Farr (
So.-Racine, Wis.) hit a three-pointer and
Megan Will (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) scored inside, but Eagles reserve post Diamond Pikulyk hit a jumper and then made two free throws to push the lead back to 49-36.
The Muskies also briefly trimmed a 17-point margin back to 60-47 with 6 minutes, 41 seconds left in the fourth after
Miranda Jacobson (
Sr.-Felch, Mich.) scored on a layup after one of six steals by
Kacey Gardner (
Fr.-Evergreen Park, Ill.). Maryn Ferron followed by draining her second three-pointer in less than a minute, though, and Lakeland never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Will scored 14 points to lead the Muskies and Jacobson added 11.
Amanda Majewski (
Jr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) also added nine points, a team-high five rebounds and four steals, and Farr also chipped in nine points and four steals.
Alyssa Lemirande led Edgewood with 17 points, making 7 of 8 shots from the field, and Shane added 16. Pikulyk also scored nine points off the bench and Kelly Carpenter added six points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles' 58% shooting was the best by a Muskies opponent since Wisconsin Lutheran shot 66.7% on Jan. 20, 2015.
Lakeland returns to action Saturday when it travels to face Marian University at 2 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
