Amanda Majewski (
Jr.-Peshtigo, Wis.) paced a balanced effort among the starting five and the Lakeland University women's basketball squad completed a season sweep of Marian University with a 71-43 win at the Sabres' Sadoff Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Majewski scored 12 points, leading four starters in double figures and a fifth just outside of it, and the Muskies pulled away after a brief challenge in the first 10 minutes. Lakeland defeated its rival from just down Highway 23 for the second time this year and eighth straight time overall in improving to 15-4 overall and 11-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
With the Muskies leading Marian (1-18 overall, 1-13 NACC) by three points as the first quarter wound down,
Abby Nylund (
So.-Crystal Falls, Mich.) hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer. That kick-started a 20-2 run over almost eight minutes, with the Sabres missing 10 of their next 11 shots and also committing five turnovers.
Majewski made two three-pointers,
Janai' Farr (
So.-Racine, Wis.) added another and
Morgan Zenon (
Fr.-Twin Lakes, Wis.) added four points in the charge. Majewski finished the half with the Muskies' final six points with a three-pointer and a three-point play and Lakeland took a 37-17 lead into halftime. The lead eventually grew to as much as 36 in the second half.
Miranda Jacobson (
Sr.-Felch, Mich.) finished with 11 points plus a game-high 13 rebounds,
Rachel Hasko (Jr.-Racine, Wis.) tied her career high with 11 points and also added five assists and
Megan Will (
So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) also scored 10 points and blocked six shots. Nylund also chipped in nine points on three three-pointers as Lakeland made eight shots from long range.
The Muskies shot 38.5% as a team (25 of 65) and also held Marian to 31.6% shooting, with the Sabres hitting 18 of 57 shots. Molly Magnus led the hosts with 11 points and was the only player in double figures for Marian.
Lakeland is scheduled to return to the court Monday night to host Alverno College at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium in a game rescheduled from this past Tuesday due to snow.
