Dominican cools off Lakeland, hands second NACC loss

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Lakeland University women's volleyball team's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championship hopes took a hit Friday night with a three-set loss to Dominican University at the Igini Sports Forum.

The Stars rolled to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 victory, snapping the Muskies' eight-match winning streak in conference play. Lakeland also dropped out of a tie for first place in the loss column in the conference standings and now sits at 8-2 in the NACC, tied for third place with Wisconsin Lutheran College and 1 1/2 behind both Aurora University and Concordia University Wisconsin at 10-1.

It was not the Muskies' night almost from the start, as they played from behind almost the entire match. Lakeland led only briefly early in each set, and was unable to match the attack of Dominican (20-6 overall, 7-3 NACC) in any of the three sets.

The Stars used five service aces and a 9-1 run in the middle of the set to take the opener, and ran off to an eight-point lead twice in the second set. The Muskies staged a late rally, closing within 23-22 before Dominican closed out the set with kills by Haley Notzen and Sarah Lychock.

The Stars quickly took control of the third set, too, with another 9-1 run to take an 11-4 lead. Lakeland never got closer than five points the rest of the way as Dominican hit a scorching .436 in the third set with 20 kills and just three errors.

The hosts attacked at a .297 rate with 48 kills and 18 errors in 101 attack attempts. Lakeland hit .193 but with considerably lower numbers in all three categories, with only 12 errors but also only 29 kills and 88 attacks. The Stars also finished with an 8-4 advantage in aces.

Abby Baumgartner (Jr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) led Lakeland with 10 kills and also added five digs. Shannon Bishop (Sr.-River Grove, Ill.) also posted seven kills and seven digs and Megan Goeser (Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) finished with six kills.

Sydney Pingitore (So.-Kenosha, Wis.) also posted seven digs and Neenah Primas (Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) finished with 20 assists.

Ola Magiera led Dominican with 12 kills and Notzen and Gabija Sinickaite both added 10 kills each with just four errors between them. Lychock also finished with 11 digs and three aces.

Lakeland is right back on the court in River Forest Saturday when it faces Concordia University Chicago at 1 p.m.
